#4944 Winchester Model 1890 Slide-Action 22RF Short, 2nd Model
Description:
#4944 Winchester Model 1890 Slide-Action 22RF Short, 2nd Model with the early takedown frame, 135XXX serial range (approx 1905-06 production). Just a representable example of this iconic little pump gun that quickly became one of Winchesters most successful repeaters and was a favorite with shooting galleries for sixty years. This one has a better-than-average bore that does have some lead build-up, but compared to what is USUALLY seen in these very early slide action kids guns, it is at least a “6” on a scale of 10 bore. The highly corrosive early fulminate black powder cartridges sure did a number on most of these rifles and they really should be considered only for their collector value and not as shooters. This little gun has some good thinning and plumming barrel blue, but also had had a trimming of the barrel; now being
22-1/2” and it also has wood from its “sister model”, the 1906 …and even that wood has an old screw-thru-the-wrist repair. The Model 1890 Winchester is probably the most highly collected and most valuable of any of the late 19th Century 22-caliber rifles ever made. This one is a decent looking representation with a great frame and good parts, if needed for a gun with the standard 24” barrel. VG+ as described. Good+ $395
