1873 Winchester. 38-40. 26 inch barrel, fine bore
Description:
SOLD...1873 Winchester. 38-40. 26 inch barrel, fine bore. A very crisp and tight 1873 Winchester rifle. This is in the best shooting caliber 38-40. Has a special order 26" octagon barrel. S/N 264294 and made in 1888. The bore is near excellent. Nice and strong rifling all the way through with just very minor frosting. With some more shooting and cleaning would probably go to shiny. NO rings or bulges. It shoots great. The mechanics of course are excellent as all my Winchesters are shooters and need nothing but ammo and a target. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly with NO bulges cases or backed out primers. Very accurate. The metal is a wonderful untouched medium plumb brown patina. Just rubbed through on the edges from recent us I would say. Never cleaned on or messed with. NO pitting anywhere on the gun. The markings are excellent. Still has the original dust cover that is loose so best to pull it back by hand as you should do anyway. The screws are excellent as well and not all burred up from tinkering. Retains the original rear sight and elevator. The front sight base is original but looks like someone has installed a brass blade instead of the original silver blade. This could easily be corrected but it looks like it was done very long ago so I will not mess with it. Has a small ding to the rear of the front sight. I think what has happened is the gun was bumped hard enough to ding the barrel and came in contact with the sight blade and broke it so they just simply replaced the blade. Nothing bad or detracting at all but I like to mention these things for an honest and accurate description. I can send you photos if you need to see this or anything else. The wood is pretty good with the forearm having NO cracks or splits with just a couple honest handling dings from use. The butt stock has no cracks or splits but shows use with some dings and gouges but still fits excellent to the metal as you can see in the photos. Nothing has been sanded on or messed with. This is a very nice and un touched 73 that is getting very hard to find that has not been tinkered with and has a very sharp bore and excellent mechanics. It does not need $300 to $500 worth of parts and labor before you can shoot it like most you will find unless you have better luck than I do when you find them. It is ready to go. These large caliber 73's are going through the roof in price as I pay more and more every time I buy one. Nothing much below $2000 any more that is any thing but a wall hanger unless I get a super deal on one and that has not been happening lately. Shop around and see what is out there and then call me quick as these do not last long. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos as I want all to be pleased with their items. I never hide or mis represent anything in my photos or description as I plan to stay in this business for many years to come.. $50 insured shipping.
