18th Century Germano-Dutch Flintlock Pistol with Relief Carved Stock
Description: NSN, .56 Caliber, 11 1/2" round barrel with octagonal breech and a good, lightly pitted bore. This is an attractively embellished, Revolutionary War era pistol that has an unmarked, early, banana-shaped lock with beveled edge plate, swan-necked cock, and faceted iron pan. The pin-fastened barrel is likewise unmarked but has crisp and sharp edges as well as a very nice wedding band transition from round to octagon. The metal has an overall mottled plum-brown patina with spots of gray scattered throughout and a very crisp touch-hole which nevertheless doesn't exhibit any reconversion welds or discoloration. The walnut stock has extensive and well executed relief carved embellishments with numerous small handling marks and blemishes throughout including a small with-the-grain crack on the left side running from the breech to the forward tip of the rear sideplate. The brass furniture is quite ornate with some very well done floral scroll and geometric engraving and a pleasant yellow-ochre patina throughout. The horn tipped wooden ramrod is held by a lightly decorated thimble and tailpipe. The mechanism is tight and fully functional and the pistol rates near fine condition overall. This is a lovely European flintlock pistol that probably dates to the mid-1700s and would make a fine display piece in any collection. {Ref.
