ALEXANDER HENRY 12-BORE DOUBLE RIFLE, EXC, CONICAL BULLETS
Description: PRICE REDUCTION!! Alexander Henry 12-bore hammer double rifle, 2.5-inch chambers. TESTED IN THE AUGUST 2014 GUN TESTS MAGAZINE! See the magazine for more details, or log onto "Gun-tests." Damascus barrels Made 1888-1890. Tight action. Excellent balance. Bores show good rifling but some pitting. The right bbl. has one small spot of noticeable pitting, but both bores withstand 150-grain charges of FFFg with 600-grain ball easily. The back-action rebounding locks are in fine condition, though the lock plates show some signs of pitting on the inside. The springs and moving parts are all perfectly functional and relatively clean. See photos. The rifle action and lock plates were fully engraved, but the engraving appears to have been buffed to clear off some past rusting, so the engraving is not cleanly visible. Despite its great weight the rifle is well balanced and handles extremely well. I do not have correct-size bullets. Groove diameter is about 0.770" and NEI has moulds that might work perfectly. Ideal would be a simple bullet of 0.750-inch diameter, paper patched for a perfect fit. Best guess is the bullet should weigh about 900-1000 grains. One could try NEI's numbers 402 or 403 moulds. The rifling twist seems to be designed for longer conical bullets, which I don't have, so I shoot slightly undersize 600-grain lead balls in it. They come out at 1390 fps, and recoil is noticeable. I use an ancient Lee Loader to make the loads, using paper cases cut to length with an X-Acto knife blade against a wood dowel in a lathe. Cleanup is easy with Ox-Yoke products. The wood looks to be original, and is sound, with superb recheckering. There are no cracks in the wood. The rifle has some cast off and a nicely detailed cheekpiece done in the typical Henry style. The recoil pad seems to be original, and is still somewhat soft. Lockup is by Jones underlever, and the forend is retained by a grip fastener. A tiny sliver of the left side of the forend wood is missing, but hardly noticeable. There are two rear-sight leaves on a tipping mount, with 90 degree rotation. The front sight is a brass bead in a longitudinal dovetail. The damascus bbls. are darkly rebrowned. The Henry name is visible on the lock plates, and the initials AH are next to the proof marks on the water table. The Henry name was recut somewhat crudely on the barrels. This is a heavy rifle for serious big-game work, and the rifle appears to have done some serious work over the years. Weight is just under 12 pounds. (11-3/4 lb.) Barrel length is 28 inches. The trigger pulls are excellent, and though the right trigger is light, recoil does not trip it. The hammers stand equal when cocked. There is no case for the rifle. Also, no ammo comes with it. I've used brass cases, easily found online, and also paper shotshell cases, a few of which will come with the rifle. Asking $8500. Serious offers considered. No trades.
