Antique European Crossbow with Goat's Foot Cocking Lever
Description: European crossbow has a 24 1/8" steel bow and measures 32" long from the front loop to back of the Schuetzen buttplate. No front or rear sights. The front ring is threaded and bears against the bow to hold it in place. A piece of bone is inlayed under the arrow nock. The left stock has a cheekrest and a brass triggerguard with grooved finger rests. All other furniture is sheet brass except the buttplate which is cast. The forend measures 2 3/4 X 2 1/4" and appears to be of ash or oak. The string winding is loose on the right side. The action needs some TLC to hold the cock. The letters "A.W." are inscribed on a brass plate on the bottom of the stock. The goat's foot also has iron hardware and appears to be made of ash. There are 2 old tags, one indicates the piece being circa 1780. We feel that this piece is 19th century. A nice example for any collection or a great decoration piece.
