Antique Spencer Model 1865 SRC. 50 Caliber RF. All There, Working Condition And Priced Right!!!
Here is a pretty decent Spencer SRC. Marked M 1865. This the model 1865 carbine and is .50 caliber RF. Standard 20" barrel. Bore is decent with rifling showing but has some pitting. Unless you convert this to CF you won’t be shooting it anyway. This one was also manufactured by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. and not the Burnside Rifle Co... S/N 15643. There were 19,000 MFG from this company and another 30,500 from the Burnside company. The markings are there but under heavy patina. Would show better I am sure if lightly cleaned but I am not messing with it. The metal as you can see is a very dark brown patina that has never been cleaned on or messed with. Is smooth with no pitting but has some very light frosting on the lever and towards the end of the barrel. Nothing bad or detracting from this ole war horse. The rear sight is loose in the dovetail. An easy fix if so desired. Original front sight, hammer, saddle ring and bar. The front bar screw is a replacement. These are available through many sources. The action works excellent and is tight lock up but you have to make sure the little extractor on the left side in the action stays forward or it slides to the rear and binds the action when opening it. Again, not a problem as you will not be shooting this one unless converted and even then will not be a problem as the gun functions fine. Original cartridge tube in the butt stock is present and in excellent condition and still has perfect spring tension. Breach block springs are tight and in excellent working order. Hammer notches are perfect on the half cock and full cock mode. The wood is good with the normal usage dings and a few grain splits in the forearm. The butt stock is ok also with the normal tight and very minor grain split on the left side. All the wood fits tight with no looseness anywhere. Usually you will find this model with much worse cracks in the butt stock as the wood is very thin were the mag tube goes in and they all crack because of this design problem and from drying out over the years on the Western frontier.. The rear sling swivel on the stock is a replacement. The lever screw could use a new one as it is burred up and you can buy these from many sources also. Also some dings on the bottom of the lever as the photos show. All in all a pretty decent example of this very sough after SRC.. To late of course to see any action in the Civil War but this model saw VERY extensive and HARD use on the Western frontier from Cavalry troops.. Most you see will show very hard use. This one is still in very decent condition considering and is probably the cheapest one you will find on the web!!! Every time I pick this gun up I think of Clint Eastwood’s movie the Unforgiven. If you have always wanted an example of this model but just did not want to spend $2000 and up for one then you have finally found one right here!!!
