Description:
SOLD... Antique 1873 Winchester rifle. Standard 24" octagon barrel. Caliber is the excellent shooting 38-40. S/N 353650 and MFG in 1890. The bore is very fine and very near excellent. Still lots of shine and sharp rifling with VERY MINOR roughness. NO rings or bulges. It shoots great. Mechanics are excellent as well. Feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. NO bulged cases and no backed out primers. Hammer notches are firm and correct and all the springs are strong. Very positive carrier and lever springs. Still retains the original dust cover but the dust cover screw is chipped as you can see in the photo. Does not detract from the gun and no way is a problem with the function. Dust cover is loose as most you see and should be retracted by hand before running the lever. It still does however retract with the lever throw but I pull them back anyway. Markings are excellent but the barrel address is a bit weak from honest handling and wear. The metal is a medium brown patina and has some surface crud from some poor storage from long ago. This crud is on the surface and could be cleaned fairly easily with some solvent and the edge of a penny. It will come right off. I just do not have the time to mess with it and it is what it is so I would just leave it alone but this is up to your desire. There is some very light scattered roughness towards the end of the barrel and mag tube also but barely into the metal. Has the original front and rear sights also. The screw heads are nice and clean and not all burred up from tinkering. The wood is very nice on this one. The forearm is solid with no splits or cracks and shows a couple nicks but all in all very nice. Fits tight to the metal all around with no gaps and still fits high to the metal in most places. The butt stock is very nice as well with no splits or cracks and fits very nice to the metal as you can see. The wood has never been sanded on or messed with. Just real nice fitting wood on this one. Not all banged up and oil soaked like so many in this price range. Just normal and honest dings and scratches. Here is a very honest and never abused 1873 with a great bore. If you are a shooter and looking for something to take out and play or hunt with and not worry about a ding or scratch on a $3000 plus 1873, then this is THE gun you want. Call me at 765-728-8049 or e-mail with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping in double box and heavy bubble wrap.
