BIG FIFTY 1859 Sharps Cartridge Conversion .50-90
Description: BIG FIFTY 1859 Sharps Cartridge Conversion .50-90. This gun was originally an 1859 percussion rifle or carbine. It has a saddle ring bar on the left side leaning toward a carbine, but the fore end may have been cut down from the musket fore end. It is what it is. It was converted to a cartridge model and fitted with a Sharps very heavy 30" octagonal barrel that is 1 1/4" accross the flats at the muzzle, impling that the conversion was a factory job. We do not know if it was a buffulo gun. We do know that in the 1880s it was acquired by the New York State Rifle Club, where a gentleman named A.Williamson (whose name is engraved on the barrel) won 4 state rifle championships with it. It was sold to a private collector in the 1920s and passed through several other hands before arriving in our hands. The last owner did fire one box of factory ammo through it and says it is accurate and powerful, (trashed an engine block). The bore is bright with good rifling. The exterior is patinaed. The stock shows wear and minor srinkage at the butt. The firing pin is intact. The half cock notch will not hold, probably just a matter of adjusting the set trigger. The last patent date on the lock is Oct. 5th 1852, and is marked C.Sharps. It has a 4 digit serial number. The action is smooth and the ejection is strong. It is too heavy for BPCR Silhouette, but would be fine for Creedmoor or Quigley matches. SOLD Barrels: Sharps Rifle Co. 30" Heavy Octagonal 1 1/4" at Muzzle Triggers: Double Set Adjustable Stock: Straight Grip Walnut Fore End: Ebony Inlaid Splinter, (possibly a cut down musket fore end.) Butt Pad: Butt Plate is Half Way Between a Crescent Butt Plate and a Carbine Butt Plate Weight: 12 Lbs., 10 Ozs. Sights: Blade and Lawrence Patent Rear Ladder Item Location: Glendale, AZ |
