British Double Shotgun by George Edward Lewis & Sons of Birmingham
Description: Serial #15445, 12 ga. (3? chamber), 32? barrels with excellent, bright bores (full chokes). This is a rather plain gun that has very thickly walled barrels with brass bead and ?G.E. LEWIS & SONS BIRMINGHAM? marked rib with about 80-85% of the original blue finish remaining blending with plum-brown and gray along the exterior radii and high edges. The frame is also maker marked on both sides but is otherwise devoid of further embellishments with a further 80% of original bright color case-hardening remaining and the balance faded to a mildly freckled gray and a commensurate amount of original bright blue on the floorplate. The third fastener has faded to bright gray and the top lever, which is still right of center, still retains 85-90% of the original blue. The barrels are Birmingham nitro proofed for 3? shells (and so is still in proof despite the unusual longer chambering) and the barrels are still on face. The checkered walnut forend and buttstock with rounded pistol grip are both in fine shape with numerous small handling marks and a few moderate bruises marring the original varnish finish. The buttstock has a slight cast-off for right-handed shooters and has a 14 1/8? length of pull to a grooved hard rubber buttplate. The drops measure 1 3/4? and 2 3/8? respectively. George Edward Lewis operated at 32 & 33 Lower Loveday St., Birmingham, from 1859 ? 1900. This example of the firm's work is plain but solidly built and in very good-fine condition overall. Indeed, there is a distinctly ?American? feel to the gun and it would not surprise us to learn that it was built for a North American customer. FFL or C&R SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: G.E.
