British No. 1 Mk. III (Tribal Copy) S.M.L.E. Rifle
Description: British No. 1 Mk. III (Tribal Copy) S.M.L.E. Rifle, This is a Tribal Copy made by a Afghan/Pakistani gunsmith, serial # 99xx, cal. 303 British, 25" barrel with a dark bore that is peppery pitted the full length of the barrel, this is a remarkably faithful hand-built copy of a No. 1 rifle that has 90% of the original blue remaining on the metal and has some minor oxidation around the nose cap and minor freckling on the remainder of the metal, the rifle probably uses an original British-built barrel mated to a locally produced "(crown)/SOP/1919/III" marked receiver that has hand engraved look-alike British proofs on the receiver ring, the smaller parts are original parts and indigenously produced parts including the bolt and cocking-piece, rear sight protectors, and the rear sight itself which has hand engraved graduations and distance markings on the tangent, the hand guards look to be original issue and have typical British armory repairs both fore and aft of the rear sight but the forend and butt stock are newer soft wood replacements that have minor handling marks as well as some light surface chipping around the butt plate and edges of the stock disk. The gunsmiths living in the tribal areas of Pakistan near the Khyber Pass have long been renowned for their ability to make very good copies of existing guns using primitive means (sometimes with nothing more advanced than a hammer, heat, and a metal file!). Keeping that in mind this is truly an amazing piece of craftsmanship and would make a terrific gunroom conversation piece, Please Note: this rifle is being offered for its collector value only and under no circumstances should it be fired.
