MODEL 1902
"PHILIPPINE"
DA
REVOLVER
.45 CALIBER
Description:
Colt Model 1902 "Philippine" DA Revolver - Cal. .45 - 6" Bbl. -- SN46180 (1902).- A variation of the Model 1878 "Frontier" revolver, also known as the "Alaskan" because of the oversize trigger guard and longer trigger. The US Ordinance Department contracted for about 4600 of these in late 1901 and very few exist today. This one was likely stolen from the military as the first two digits of the serial have been pretty much defaced and the "US" on the lower right front of the frame has been polished off. However, the "RAC" inspector marks are sharp and clear on the cylinder, guard, and left side of the frame - also "JTT" inspector mark is on the right side of the frame (JTT is John Tallifero Thompson, the inventor of the "tommy gun") and spent time as a government inspector. Bore is about perfect and action is smooth with excellent timing and lock-up in both DA and SA. Metal is VG+ to about excellent condition with some minor "pinpricks" and some spotting on parts of the barrel, ejector housing, and frame - retains 65% to 70% + thinning blue with some drifting to brown, mostly on the frame and backstrap. Hard rubber grips are undamaged and show checkering and logo with moderate wear, primarily on the left grip. Overall VG + condition and except for defacing numbers, all original. A very scarce and desirable early Colt DA at a reasonable price - this is purported to have come from Oklahoma and may have a history as an "outlaw" revolver - a nice and interesting collectible.
