Civil War U.S. Parrott Artillery Projectile
Description: This is a 3" diameter case shot; 8 3/8" long; weighing 10 lbs. 10 oz. The projectile has a cylindrical body with rounded nose and a somewhat pockmarked dark brown surface. There is some modern writing in white paint on the surface that reads, "U.S. / PARROTT / TYPE-III / CASE-SHOT / GETTYSBURG / JULY 1-3, 1863"; and there is corroded metal flash tube at the nose as well as an intact cupped metal obturating skirt at the base (the sabot is not present). These projectiles had a habit of engaging the rifling of Parrott guns extremely well; dangerously shedding the skirts at the muzzle (coupled with the propensity Parrott gun breeches had for bursting; this was not a great combination!). This example is quite handsome and is a visually striking item for display. {Refs.
