Colt Model 1878 Hammer Shotgun, Engraved, 30” Fine Twist Steel Barrels, Mfg 1880, Restored
Description: TAKE A STEP BACK IN TIME with this Colt Model 1878 12 gauge hammer shotgun. The Model 1878 was Colt’s most expensive gun when it was manufactured, and is generally considered one of the best hammer shotguns ever produced in America. This gun, which was manufactured in 1880, is properly restored to a condition similar to what it would have been after a few years use by the original owner. The wonderful piece of our history is ready to go back to the field to do its job and be enjoyed, and if properly maintained should not need another tune-up for 50 years. The wood is reconditioned to bring out its original beauty and better preserve it. The preparation of the barrels for refinishing and the action for re-color-case hardening was entirely by hand, and traditional methods used for both processes. The bores are in excellent condition, and the lettering on the barrel rib and the engraving on the receiver are sharp. The 30” barrels are both choked Improved Cylinder (.010). The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is 037/.039/.036 and at the middle of the barrel is .044/.046/.042; the left barrel is .028/.031/.040 and .035/.035/.042, respectively. Bores 9” from the breach are .743/.743 respectively. Chambers are 2-3/4”. The gun locks up tight and on face. This shotgun weighs 8 lbs 2 oz. The drop at the comb is 2-1/2” and at the heel 3-1/2”. Length of pull is 14”. All serial numbers, 4014, match. The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired using low pressure 2-3/4” shells produced for Damascus-barreled shotguns by RST Corporation. However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one a hundred and thirty-five years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed. The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.
