Edward Whistler 20 Gauge Back Action Hammergun with 28” Nitro Damascus Barrels
Description:
*** SOLD *** This nice handling 20 gauge hammer gun has 28” Damascus barrels nitro proofed for 2-3/4” cartridges, extractors, rebounding hammers and the reliable Jones underlever. Both sidelocks are extensively engraved. There is about 50% engraving coverage on the frame. The gun weighs 6lb even and was most likely made in Birmingham. Serial number is 36733. *** The gun is marked “E Whistler” on both locks and the rib reads “E Whistler 11 Strand London”. Whistler occupied the same London premises at 11 Strand from 1844 to 1957. This gun was most likely made 1875 or earlier. The Damascus barrels have recently been re-browned and have a lovely figure with mirror bores. The right barrel is bored 0.629 with a constriction of 0.003(Skeet). Minimum wall thickness is 0.023. The left barrel is bored 0.632 with a constriction of 0.010(Light Modified). Minimum wall thickness is 0.026. The recent nitro proof was in London post 1989 and was probably done when the chambers were lengthened to 2-3/4”. *** The straight grip stock has shootable dimensions and is neutral in cast. The LOP is 14-3/4” over a ¾” horn butt plate. The stock has been professionally refinished and the checkering nicely recut. The stock has a few small handling marks. There is a nick in the checkering of the forearm. Nothing major. *** I give a 3-day non-firing inspection and will accept returns at purchaser’s expense only if the gun is not as described In the listing. *** This would be a great hammergun for quail, doves, woodcock or clays. Fall is coming and this very shootable hammegun just might have your name on it.
