Fine U.S. Model 1842 Percussion Musket by Springfield
Description: NSN, .69 caliber, 42” barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore that has brown freckling along its length. This is a splendid musket that has an 1848 dated Springfield lock, undated barrel with full complement of crisp U.S. proofs. The metal was expertly cleaned at some point back to near armory bright with crisp edges and the metal still rates excellent condition. The walnut stock is likewise expertly refinished to excellent shape with only a couple very minor blemishes, on the left hand side opposite the lock, and a couple of negligible handling marks in the otherwise fine military oil finish. It appears that no cartouches were ever applied to the wood. The mechanics are tight and excellent and the back of the lock looks practically new with bright blue parts and crisp hammer notches etc. The original trumpet-headed ramrod is included. This is a very interesting, sparsely marked musket that is in unusually great, little-used condition. It is an excellent example and would make a great addition to any collection. This musket has been in our personal collection for many years and we feel it could have possibly been a worker Take-home or "Lunchbox" gun.
