Japanese Type 38 school rifle with nickel finish
Description: SN 00104175 type 38 Arisaka, Tokyo arsenal. Bore is good t verygood. The breech is stamped with a canceled chrysanthemum a top of the school symbol over the type 38 characters. This rifle was obviously transferred from the 1JA to an educational agency. See page 53 of the type 38 Arisaka special project #8 by Alland & Macy. The extra Zeres to the left of the serial number and on the breech and bolt and trigger group also indicated school usage. This rifle is nickel finished. The finish is overall aged and frosted with the bright area being the areas of handling (bolt etc). We have no idea as to who or why this piece was nickel. It has been suggested that it may have been used as a school parade piece. The wood has been varnished . There are numerous discussions as to whether or not the Japanese had nickeled pieces. Honeycutt in military rifles of Japan 2nd Ed at page 174 pictures . A nickel plated type 30 for parade use. There is no reason why a canceled and Dept of Education Rifle as this piece would not be nickeled for parade or honorguard use. An interesting variation.
