John Dickson & Son Bar-In-Wood Hammergun - Rare
Description: *** SOLD *** Think about it. How many Dickson hammerguns have you ever seen offered for sale? Not many I'll bet. They just don't come up very often. So take a look at this rare J. Dickson & Son 12 bore bar-in-wood hammergun with 28” sleeved nitro barrels, double triggers and extractors. Beautifully engraved in a Celtic pattern with well sculpted high hammers. Tight on face with solid lock-up. Serial number 4389 made in 1892 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Gun weighs 6lb 8oz. *** The full coverage engraving is first rate and done in the typical Dickson style. Not only are the frame, lock plates, and hammers elaborately engraved but so are the various metal parts of the forend iron. *** Stocked in a very nicely figured piece of walnut with straight grip and splinter forearm with Anson latch. Checkering is crisp. Has a small repair barely visible just behind the end of the top tang and a few handling marks on the refinished buttstock. The left lock plate is somewhat proud of the wood along its bottom edge dues to wood shrinkage. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” over the original ebony butt plate by 1-1/2” by 2”. Slightly cast off for the right hand shot. *** The 28” sleeved barrels are nitro proofed and chambered for 2-1/2” cartridges. They are topped by a solid concave game style rib. The right barrel is bored 0.730 with a constriction of 0.005 for an open Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. The left barrel is bored 0.729 with a constriction of 0.041 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033. Improved Cylinder and Full is a fairly common choke combination for guns of this era. *** Dickson hammerguns are rare enough but bar-in-wood Dickson's are even more rare. This gorgeous hammergun is in good mechanical condition with great handling qualities. A great gun for the connoisseur collector, Vintager events, clay and game shooting. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection and will only accept returns if gun is not as described. SOLD Antique: Yes |
