Left Hand - James Lang Best Quality Boxlock Ejector – Beautifully Cased with Accessories and a Privately Printed History of the Gun
Description: *** SOLD *** This gun represents an extremely rare chance to buy a gun signed by this little known son of the famous Joseph Lang. Date of manufacture is circa 1888-1890 with an address of 18 Brook Street, London. Very fine bouquet and scroll engraving combined with the sensitive restoration makes it a very handsome and highly 'shootable' gun for either game or clays. This interesting boxlock was refurbished about eight years ago by Toby Barclay of Heritage Guns UK and has seen little use since then. *** The gun comes complete with a brass cornered period leather case in very good external condition and new handle and straps. Internally, the case has been relined with new 'Burgundy' all wool baize, carries a Heritage Guns trade label and is fitted out with ebony and brass tools including 3 turnscrews mounted in a hand made oak block and a two part cleaning rod. The case is further equipped with an oil bottle and set of cleaning tools in a leather wallet. The Heritage Guns' package would not be complete without its unique leather bound “Companion” history of the gun and a hand crafted pair of Heritage Guns crafted Damascus snapcaps with the maker's name engraved on the brass. *** The 12 bore action is of Anson & Deeley boxlock design and features double triggers bolted by an automatic top tang safety slide, top lever opening operating a 'Purdey Bolt' by way of a 'Scott Spindle', three point bolting including Greener's top extension, and a rare Dallaway & Cox sear and tumbler ejector tripped by integral extensions to the mainsprings. It is wonderfully engraved in a Best fine bouquet and scroll with a signed action. Gun weight is 6lb 7oz.Trigger pulls measure approximately: front trigger 4 1/2lb and rear trigger 5lb. *** The sleeved steel barrels are 28" in length, chambered for 2 ¾" (70mm) cartridges with long forcing cones and are of brazed 'dovetail' lump construction with soft soldered ribs. The sleeving is by TIG welding, so called 'Invisible Sleeving'. Top rib is of the smooth, concave, game type. London reproof for 70mm nitro powder cartridges in 2004. The bore diameter of the right barrel is 0.724 with a constriction of 0.008 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left barrel has a bore diameter of 0.724 with a constriction of 0.014 for a Light Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031. Ideal choking for game or clays. *** Straight hand stock and splinter forend are crafted from well figured walnut with a walnut extension, well defined drop points and a blank oval. The stock is slightly cast on for a left-handed shot but can easily be bent for a right hand shooter. The stock is finished with a traditional linseed oil based preparation as used on best guns by one of the top English makers. This finish uses no grain fillers to achieve its deep, smooth lustre, only many hours of alternate build and flatting off of the surface. Checkering is crisp. The finish is in great condition with only a few handling marks from normal usage and a spot of wear in front of the comb. Stock dimensions are15-1/4” over a 1" extension to a checkered butt by 1-1/2” by 1-7/8”. Slightly cast on for the left hand shot. A great buy for a rare gun magnificently cased with its own personal history published in a leather bound volume. *** Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense if the gun is not as described in the listing. SOLD Antique: Yes |
