M-1860 Spencer Rifle w/ Original Sling & Bayonet
Description:
This rifle was made by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Co., Boston, Mass., in 1863. Although Spencer rifles are not super uncommon, finding one that is untouched with its original sling intact and its bayonet and scabbard is a true rarity. In discussing this find with knowledgeable Spencer collectors, it has become clear that original Spencer slings are extremely scarce. This group has never been cleaned and is offered literally "as found". The rifle is a fine example with very deep legible Spencer markings. The untouched wood still has a visible inspector's mark in the stock. The butt stock does however, have a crack which runs from the back of the receiver to just past the comb, a common occurrence with Spencers. It is, nonetheless, still very solid. The bore has strong rifling but could use a good cleaning (as I said, we are leaving it untouched). The metal likewise is very good. There are a patches of rust spots but these may come off, but either way, they do not detract from the gun. The sling is solid and very clearly has never been off the gun. The bayonet, like the gun has spotty rust and needs a good cleaning, but fits perfectly and correctly is lacking in the "US' markings. The scabbard is complete but very worn, with dry leather and a visible inspector's cartouche. The gun's serial number is in the 7,000 range. The Spencer was one of the finest and the most famous firearms of the Civil War and used by both mounted troops and Infantry of the Union army. The Spencer has the distinction of being personally tested by President Lincoln. Designed by Christopher Spencer of Manchester, Conn., the Confederates called it the gun you could load on Sunday and shoot all week. 11,471 Army rifles were purchased by the Federal government.
