NORTH HAMPTON-LEHIGH SCHOOL PENNSYLVANIA FLINTLOCK RIFLE SIGNED J. SCHOLB CIRCA 1800.
Description: NORTH HAMPTON-LEHIGH SCHOOL PENNSYLVANIA FLINTLOCK RIFLE SIGNED J. SCHOLB CIRCA 1800. 56 ½” overall with 40 ½” octagon .45 caliber deeply rifled barrel signed on the underside at the breech “J. SCHOLB”. Tiger maple stock with brass mounts. Fine early style brass patchbox without side panels and having a very distinctive “Whales Tail” type finial which terminates in a flower rather than the pointed end of the tail. Very delicate butt plate with fine tapered tang. Eastern Northhampton School full panel sideplate with pointed tail. Beautifully proportioned stock with pronounced Lehigh Valley curved butt. Flint lock plate signed “ROGERS/&/ BROTHERS/ WARRENTED”. Fine overall with the stock having some very professional restoration of slivers of wood along the forend and barrel tang. Probable reconversion to flint but so well done it could easily pass as original. John Scholb is a well documented barrel maker of the Lehigh area. His barrels appear on rifles by other makers of the Northampton-Lehigh School and it is our opinion that this rifle is the product of one of the Rupp family-either John or Hermann. An extra nice rifle with beautiful tiger maple stock and a rare and appealing patchbox. Excellent provenance. SOLD Antique: Yes |
