New York Mule Ear Rifle Converted to Smooth Bore by John Moore
Description: NSN, approximately .72 caliber, 32" swamped octagon barrel with rifle sights and a very good, bright bore that has some minor freckling along its length. This is a well made half stock sporting gun with an interesting mule ear lock marked "GILBERT/PATENT/ROCHESTER" ahead of the hammer. The metal has developed an overall dark plum-brown patina with some pinprick pitting on certain areas, most noticeably around the breech and nipple, and the top barrel flat is engraved "MOORE, ALBANY" (John Moore was in business in Albany, NY 1820-1835 while Ephraim Gilbert, who operated at Rochester, NY 1828-1843, was granted a patent on this lock on April 3, 1829). There is light geometric and floral scroll engraving as well as a reclining dog on the top tang and a small metal flash cup has been added to the nose of the hammer. The walnut stock has nice fancy grain, checkered wrist, cheek rest, horn forend tip, and is wedge fastened with two rectangular silver escutcheons. Light handling marks and minor surface blemishes are present throughout the added varnish finish. Originally, this was a rifle but it has since been bored out and is now a very nice fowler. This is an interesting New York made gun that has lots of charm and is in very good condition overall. Antique.
