Nice U.S. Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle
Description:
Serial #523467, .45-70, 32 1/2” barrel with an excellent, bright bore.
This ramrod bayonet-equipped rifle has retained 85-90% of the original blue on the barrel, receiver, and lock with some very mild fading and finish loss revealing smooth plum-brown underlying metal.
The 1884 dated breech block has some gray fading and mild freckling with some still vivid original color case-hardening remaining.
The walnut stock was refinished to excellent condition long ago with minor handling marks in the excellent oil finish and a still crisp and clear “SWP/1891” cartouche on the left side of the wrist.
The stock compartment contains an original stuck case extractor and a Model 1879 combination tool while the buttplate has a mottled gray-brown patina with a few very minor pinprick pits here and there.
This is a great Trapdoor that has excellent original metal and handsomely refinished wood.
