Nova Scotia Marked 3rd Model Brown Bess

Description:
This 3rd model Bess is marked on the left stock "No.71/1: BN N.S.M." for gun "No. 71, 1st Battalion, Nova Scotia Militia." The lockplate tail is marked "Tower" vertically with a crown over GR and a crown over broad arrow. The .76 caliber barrel measures 39 1/4" long with 2 British proofs at the breech. No sling swivels are present. The ramrod appears to be a nice reproduction. The barrel has a nice, smooth brown patina with some moderate to heavy pitting in the vicinity of the flash hole. The wood grades antique very good and would be considered to be above average condition for a militia Brown Bess. The lock is original flint as is the barrel. The musket is storekeeper marked and dated 1800 as are many of the Nova Scotia muskets. In the year 1800 there were 7,200 men on the muster rolls of the Nova Scotia militia. The 1st Battalion was located in Eastern Hants County and out of the town of Truro, Nova Scotia. An original bayonet comes with this musket. The bayonet is from a 2nd pattern Bess, marked and built by George and Samuel Harvey 1779-1781. With this musket is included the article on the markings of the Nova Scotia militia muskets by my old friend, Dr. Ross MacInnis. This article was published in Vol 33, No 2 (May 1995) of the Canadian Journal of Arms Collecting. A very good example of a regimentally marked musket with original bayonet. Antique
