CASED ENGRAVED KAISER WILHELM II PRESENTATION MANNLICHER MOD. 1900 PISTOL TO THE SULTAN OF TURKEY. 7.65 Mannlicher caliber engraved in Germanic “vine and leaf” scroll with a coin finished frame and blued barrel, trigger guard and back strap. Checkered ebony grips. In the original chamois lined case with inside of lid embossed in gold-“EHRHARDT WERKE/ABTEILUNG SOMMERDA GEWEHRFABRIK/SYSTEM MANNLICHER 1903”. Tooled, red Moroccan leather exterior with gilded bronze crest of Sultan Abdul Hamid of Turkey. Included within are an oiler, screw driver and cleaning rod. Also included is the card of Freiherr and Freifrau von Horst on the front of which is written “with compliments of” and is dated “aug 7/45”. Hand written on the back of the card-“This pistol is reported as having been a present from H. M. Kaiser Wilhelm II to Abdul Hamid” and is signed “Louis Baron von Horst”. Baron von Horst was one of the most famous German spies of WWI having been involved in plots to blow up ships supplying the British during the early part of the war. He was captured and imprisoned by the British for 5 years and finally deported after the war to Germany. He died in 1947. How he acquired this fine pistol and to whom he gave it are a mystery.
