Percussion Double Gun by Cocker of Glasgow
Description:
NSN, 20 bore, 29? barrels with about good, lightly pitted bores.
This is a nicely proportioned, back-action gun that has a mottled plum-brown patina mixing with gray along the barrels and a mild dark plum tone along the other metal components.
The barrels have a ?COCKER GLASGOW? marking along the center rib with sparse but attractive floral scroll engraving at the breech, on the hammers, and on the ?COCKER? marked lock plates which also have small game bird vignettes as well.
Both locks are tight and fully functional but the left sear notch, although secure, is a bit light.
The English walnut stock has been sanded and a new oil finish added.
Some small handling marks and minor blemishes are present throughout and traces of the original checkering remain on the wrist.
The stock is fastened by a single wedge with simple oval escutcheons as well as an ornately engraved triggerguard with geometric finial and scrollwork vignette along the exterior of the bow.
The buttplate is also dull gray and has faded engraving along the top tang.
The gun comes with a brass-tipped period ramrod held by two plain cylindrical thimbles and a decorated tail-pipe with stylized pineapple finial.
William Dixon Cocker operated in Glasgow from 1836 until 1846 and this is a very nice looking example of his handiwork in fair-good overall condition.
