RCMP & Alberta Provincial Police S&W .38 Revolver Rig

SN 272170 is a Smith & Wesson M&P revolver original purchased by the Alberta Provincial Police and so marked on the backstrap. The bore is bright and rates excellent. When the RCMP took over policing in Alberta they took the police 4" revolvers and converted them to a 5" tapered barrel to confirm with the standard RCMP issue. See pages 56 & 57 of Don Klancher's great book "Arms & Accouterments of the Mounted Police 1873-1973"(See our book listing for the same). This piece is MP marked on the butt & twice on the frame under the grip. This piece retains about 95% of the original finish with case color on the hammer. The under barrel flat shows our import mark. The small group of Alberta Provincial Police guns were part of the inherited guns as acquired by the Mounties when they took over policing duties in the various Canadian provinces. The inherited revolvers usually were issued to plain-clothes members, the Marine Division and other possible sub sections of the Force. This 38 Special with the 5" barrel provides an opportunity for the collector to have an example of the widely issued S&W Model 10. To our knowledge, no 38 cal Model 10's were surplused by the RCMP as was the case with the Colt New Service revolvers. This piece comes with an original RCMP Sam Browne as per page 160 of the aforesaid reference. The belt is punch marked MP. The rig is overall complete and original. This item is a relatively scarce complete rig. A piece for the serious RCMP, police or Smith & Wesson collector. FFL or C&R
