Rare Cased English Marked Colt 1878 .450 Boxer Revolver
Description:
SN 4305 is a 1878 5 1/2 " barrel nickel revolver shipped to the colt London Agency in 1880.
This is one of only 402 5 1/2", nickel 450 boxer 1878 built and shipped by Colt.
To appreciate this colt; reference has to be made to "Colt's Double Action Revolver" model of 1878 by Don Wilkerson.
Specifically reference "British Calibers" pages 343 to page 355.
The factory letter indicates the caliber as .45/c.
The left triggerguard bow shows the 45 cal marking above A B (Boxer).
See pages 351 to 354.
the majority of the revolvers in 450 were shipped prior to 1882 and all show the 45 cal over B.
Serial # 4164 is another one of the 30 revolver as this piece was contained in the 15th May 1880 shipment page 356.
The cylinder back shows a different number and a P proof. page 344 and 345 describe the exchange of cylinders at the colt London Agency and the problems faced by London relating to cylinders page 345.
This piece shows the correct barrel address with both the Hartford and London Address.
The bore rates as very good to excellent with spotted freckling.
Page 347 discusses the problems faced by the London Agency relating to the original factory finish.
it is apparent that significant numbers of the English model 1878 revolvers were refinished (Blue and nickel).
this piece was renickeled
including the component parts.
All of the barrel stampings, the serial/assembly numbers, proofs and caliber markings are clear and crisp.
This indicates that this work was undertaken by expert English craftsmen.
This piece wears an excellent aged pair of hard rubber grips.
Under the correct lighting .
They show a black to greenish tinge with minor surface wear and a small chip on the base of the right panel. The first revolvers shipped to London with rubber grips were in April of 1880, one month prior to the shipping of this piece and serial # 4164 on the 13th May 1880.
This revolver is housed in an original deluxe English , brass bound case.
This contains 12 original Kynoch cartridges 8 empty cases, a modern oil bottle and an original turn-screw.
