Rare Commercial Lee-Speed Carbine Regulated by Rigby
Description: Serial #11583, .303 British, 24” barrel with a good bore that has dark freckling with some mild pitting within the grooves. This is a nice, service pattern rifle that was built on a BSA-made receiver and regulated by the prestigious gunmaking firm of John Rigby & Co. The Enfield rifled, “JOHN RIGBY & CO. 72 ST. JAMES ST. L(ONDO)N” marked barrel retains 75-80% of the original blue that has developed a warm plum-brown patina where the blue has worn and faded. The receiver and barrel have matching serial numbers and “G122” service rifle numbers indicating that the rifle was built to military specifications for match purposes. The non-matching numbered bolt is not equipped with a dust cover and retains a commensurate amount of the original blue with some fading and wear on the handle and bearing surfaces. The original barrel and volley sights are still present, and the walnut stock and handguard are in good plus condition with numerous handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout. There are some with-the-grain cracks at the nose of the handguard and a fairly thick added oil finish over the bruises and marks. The rifle comes with a single, chained ten round magazine, the brass buttplate has a bright yellow-ochre patina, and the stock compartment is empty. The entry in the Rigby record books lists this as having been originally sold as a 24" barreled carbine to a Mr. H. F. Low on January 10, 1900. This is a very nice Lee rifle by one of the best names in British gunmaking, and would make an interesting addition to any collection. {Refs. “The Lee-Enfield A Century of Lee-Metford & Lee-Enfield Rifles & Carbines” by Ian Skennerton; 2007} FFL or C&R SOLD Manufacturer: Enfield Model: Long Lee Serial Number: 11583 Caliber Info: .303 Gauge Info: .303 |
