Rare Model 1873 Brazilian Comblain Military Rifle
Description: Serial #41469, 11mm CF, 32 3/4” barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling towards the chamber mouth. This is a Belgian-made rifle with “G. MORDANT/LIEGE” maker's mark on the top flat of the barrel breech and numerous Liege proofs on both the receiver and barrel. The barrel has an overall darkly mottled plum-brown and gray patina with scattered spots of freckling and pinprick pitting throughout. The receiver has a slightly brighter patina with a more pewter gray appearance and has matching assembly numbers throughout. The brass bands and nosecap have developed a dull yellow-ochre patina over time and the walnut stock and forend have numerous handling marks and blemishes in the dark added military oil finish. The short handguard is missing and there are some considerable gaps around the wrist tangs but the buttstock is firmly attached nevertheless. The action is tight and fully functional, although the lever is a bit difficult to close, and the original ramrod is no longer present. These are rare guns in the U.S. and represent a little-known yet fascinating chapter in the history of breech-loading military rifles. This example is in good plus-near very good condition overall.
