Rare Model 1885 Remington Lee Carbine 45-70
Description: Serial #50393, .45-70, 24” barrel with a very good bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves along its length. This is one of only about 25 original M1885 carbines manufactured by Remington in 1889 and has an overall plum-brown patina that blends smoothly into the original blue that remains on protected areas. There is some gray fading at the muzzle, along the high edges, and on the bearing surfaces of the bolt too. The breech end of the barrel has faint marks and a reference cut where a large, non-standard rear sight used to be fitted, but the correct, short based carbine rear sight is now present. The walnut stock is not a cut down rifle stock and does not have the cleaning rod channel. The wood is in fine-near excellent condition with some light handling marks scattered about the surface of the military oil finish. In his book, “The Remington-Lee Rifle”, Eugene Myszkowski states that of the original 25 examples, only five of these carbines are known: all in the 50340 – 50400 serial range, and all but one have the bayonet stud. None of them have government markings, and they were purpose-built with original carbine barrels and stocks. They are not merely cut down rifles. This is an extremely rare and desirable Remington in fine condition that would make a stellar addition to any collection of rare American or repeating rifles. {Ref. “ The Remington-Lee Rifle”, by Eugene Myszkowski; 1994} Antique SOLD Manufacturer: Remington Model: Lee Serial Number: 50393 Caliber Info: .45-70 Gauge Info: .45-70 |
