Rare U.S. Army Model 1882 Lee Trials Rifle by Remington (IDP Marked)
Description: Serial #8841, .45-70, 32 1/2” barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some very mild freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome rifle that has 60-70% of the original blue remaining on the “VP” proofed barrel that blends smoothly into lightly freckled blue-gray on the balance with some silvering at the muzzle. The “US” marked receiver retains 75-80% original blue with a dull pewter gray patina on the remainder. The bolt still has original armory bright on the body with plum-brown mixing into the original blue on the handle and early style cocking-piece. The walnut stock has numerous minor handling marks and small surface blemishes in the oil finish added over unsanded wood with crisp “DFC” inspector initials on the underside of the wrist next to the firing proof, “DFC” cartouche on the heel of the butt on the right side, and a deep “I.D.P./18” unit or rack stamp on the comb just ahead of the buttplate tang. The rifle has an original magazine, but no ramrod is present. These rifles were purchased on a trial basis by the Army and are sometimes found with the I.D.P. marking which remains unidentified, although several possibilities exist ranging from Indian Police to the Dept. of the Interior. In any event, this is a handsome example of a rare U.S. trials rifle in fine-near excellent condition and would make a great addition to any collection of American or Remington longarms. {Ref. “ The Remington-Lee Rifle”, by Eugene Myszkowski; 1994} Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Remington Model: Lee Serial Number: 8841 Caliber Info: .45-70 Gauge Info: .45-70 |
