About Us: When calling ask for the Gun Library
Remington Hepburn (No. 3) .32 Cal.
Description: After examination by the Gun Library staff, our opinion of this Hepburn No. 3 is that it was originally chambered in .32-30 Remington (32 1-5/8") and later rechambered to .32-40 Remington-Hepburn (32 2-1/8") as evidenced by the overstamped markings on the lower barrel flat (see photo). This Hepburn No. 3, aside from being in nice condition, has a bore that slugs at .308". The rifle was traded to us with the included fire-formed casing from a .30-40 Krag which by its dimensions indicates a chambering of .32-40 Remington-Hepburn (Not to be confused with a .32-40 Winchester or .32-40 Ballard). It is suggested that the buyer have a competent gunsmith take a chamber casting to definitively identify chambering prior to use. The tang sight is an accurate reproduction of one that would be correct on a Remington No. 1 rifle, not one typically found on a Remington-Hepburn No. 3. SOLD Manufacturer: Ca. 1890 (est.) Caliber Info: .32-40 Hepburn Metal Condition: Faded remnants of original case coloring can be detected on the triggerguard and lower tang, balance of the receiver surfaces have worn to a gray patina. The octagonal barrel retains approximately 50% of original bluing, the balance being patina with som Wood Condition: Both stock and forend have been recoated in the past (Tung Oil is suspected) and various minor contact impressions are scattered about the surfaces attesting to light handling and field use. Bore Condition: The bore may be classified as excellent with bright surfaces, sharp lands on well-defined rifling and no visible pitting or "frostiness" on any areas. The barrel wears a target crown with no visible damage. Barrels: 28" Octagonal Triggers: Standard trigger Stock: Checkered, pistol grip walnut Stock Dimensions: LOP: 14 Fore End: Smooth walnut with steel nose cap Butt Pad: Standard sporting steel buttplate Weight: 9 lbs. Sights: Dovetailed blade front, semi-buckhorn rear and reproduction tang sight. Extras: Fire-formed shell casing formed from a .30-40 Krag case measuring 2,115" O.A.L., with a rim diameter of .540", head diameter of .453" and neck diameter of .330" (see sketch & photos).
