Remington New Model Army Revolver Conversion named Confederate officer
Description: Serial #87165, .44 CF, 8” octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a trace amount of freckling within the grooves. This revolver has about 60-70% of the original bright blue remaining on the frame and cylinder with the balance turned to a smooth, lightly freckled gray-brown patina that is mostly visible on the barrel which was lightly cleaned to a dark gray pewter patina long ago. The brass triggerguard has a fairly bright yellow-ochre patina and the hammer still has fairly bright original color case-hardening on both sides. The walnut grips are in very good condition with scattered small handling marks and surface blemishes, heaviest on the left side of the butt which has a small chip running through the still visible cartouche. The grip screw bolster on the right side is no longer present and has been replaced by a brass nut and the grip screw itself is a later addition. Despite that, the mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly. An interesting, very faint, post-Civil War engraved identification is present on the backstrap in neat cursive writing: “Capt. James Lewis/Confederate States”. A cursory search of the American Civil War Database yields only one person by that name who held the rank of Captain in direct Confederate Army service: Capt. James C. Lewis of the CS General Staff (enlistment date unrecorded, but he is listed as having survived the war). This is by no means a positive identification, indeed, the engraving was certainly done mechanically at a later date, but it does add some tantalizing possibilities as to the original owner of the revolver. Regardless, this is still a great Civil War revolver that was converted for CF cartridge, and is still in very good plus-near fine condition overall.
