Roper Revolving Shotgun in 12 gauge manufactured by the Roper Sporting Arms Co. of Hartford,Conn. with patent dates of April 10,1866 and July 14, 1868. This 4 shot repeater is the first repeating shotgun ever invented and manufactured. Invented by Sylvester H. Roper of Roxbury, Mass. Mr. Roper was a prolific inventor who invented a Handstich Sewing Machine, a hot air engine, and the first motorcycle, the Roper Steam Velocipede, for which he was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2002. The Roper Shotgun was manufactured in Amherst, MA from 1867 till 1868. It was manufactered in Hartford, CT from 1869 till 1876. It was not a huge commercial success and low numbers were manufactured. Later he teamed with Christopher Minor Spencer of Spencer Rifle fame to patent the Spencer-Roper Shotgun which was the first pump shotgun invented and manufactured. He died in a motorcycle accident in 1896. This is a historic and unique piece of Americana in overall very good condition.
