He was a prominent Republican who was Mayor of Passaic during the Civil War. His son Robert was a New Jersey State Senator 1895-1897 and was an alternate delegate to the Republican convention in '96. William McKinley chose Garrett A. Hobart from the state of New Jersey to run as his Vice President during his successfulfor the White House. New Jersey was seen as an important swing state during that election. Very interesting historical piece! Cased in a very nice Rosewood case with key. Inscription plate engraved ""HAW"".
