Starr Model 1858 DA Army Revolver (Belgian Cartridge Conversion)
Description: Serial #6375H, 6” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very interesting revolver that was converted to centerfire cartridge in Belgium (post 1893 Liege ELG proof on the cylinder with further Belgian proofs on the frame and barrel). The caliber is a little bit of a mystery. There is one dummy round included that was made up for the gun as a model. The metal retains 80-85% of an excellent rust blue finish applied during the conversion that has silvered along the edges and there are some areas of mild pinprick pitting as well on the sides of the frame at the grip juncture and ahead of the cylinder. Traces of straw color remain on the hammer and trigger and the walnut grip, which has no visible U.S. cartouche, has some minor handling marks and small blemishes in the military oil finish. The conversion plate on the frame matches the blue precisely and a small assembly number has been stamped onto the inner frame surface and cylinder (“19”). The mechanism is functional but is choppy as is not unusual for this model. This is a very interesting and unusual foreign cartridge conversion of a Civil War era Starr revolver and would make a great addition to a collection.
