US Military M. 1904 Rifle Scabbard Dated 1905 with Unit Marking
Description: A rifle scabbard of medium russet leather for the new model 1903 Springfield bolt rifle. The top of the scabbard throat is unit stamped "(9) I. H.Q. 34 D." with the armory "Rock Island Arsenal /1905/H.E.K.", below on the body of the scabbard. Evidently, this was part of the headquarters kit and so marked. Brophy's book "The Springfield 1903 Rifle" states on page 421, "the shape and construction of the Krag scabbard prevented its use with the 03 rifle. As a consequence, the model 1904 scabbard was adopted by the cavalry for use with the 1903 rifle." A photo of the 1904 scabbard is shown on the following page 422. Another interesting line is found in "Arming & Equipping the United States Cavalry 1865-1902" by Ferrington on page 557 where the "scabbard for United States magazine rifle, model of 1903 adopted in 1904" which is the scabbard we offer for sale. This is a very rare rifle scabbard, made in the 2nd year of production, for the 1903 Springfield rifle. Complete with all belts, buckles and hooks and in very fine condition.
