WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 - CAL .44 - 28" BBL. - 62B SIGHT - ANTIQUE - LETTER
Description:
Winchester Model 1873 Rifle - 3rd Model - Cal. .44 - 28" Oct. Bbl. - set trigger - 62B Tang sight - SN 196XXX (1886). - special order 28" barrel, set trigger, and rare 62B tang sight. Bore is VG++ to near excellent and bright with sharp rifling but shows some light roughness throughout - I would grade at 7 to 8. Excellent action with good lock-up. Metal is VG+ to excellent overall with some spotting or staining on the barrel and magazine tube and the magazine tube has some light pitting on the bottom. Barrel and magazine tube retain 65% to 70% blue with some thinning especially on the magazine tube - barrel has sharp markings and crisp edges. Receiver has about 75% + blue with thinning in spots and some light surface "pinpricks" , mostly on the left side. Crescent buttplate has faded to a gray patina with some staining. Wood is excellent and except for a few light surface handling marks and a few dings in the buttstock, is undamaged and retains 85% to 90% finish. This '73 has the very rare 62B tang sight that was made by Winchester and is exclusive to the 1873, but the center "slider" is missing as is the plunger style stop on the tang. Front sight is a Lyman combination "globe" style that is a period sight but not original to this rifle. The trigger is a single set trigger. The Winchester letter from Cody is unusual as it states only 28" octagon barrel and dates to warehouse and shipped but no mention of 62B sight, set trigger, or even the caliber. It is my opinion that the set trigger and 62B were installed at the factory and simply not noted in the original records as it is difficult to believe that these would be installed as "aftermarket" features. Overall this 1873 is in VG + condition and except as noted, all original. A super example of a very old 1873 with several Special Order features that will make a nice shooter and collectible.
