Winchester 1894 FIRST MODEL Deluxe
Description:
This, as anyone who is really a serious 1894 collector knows, is in the Holy Grail category. I have owned probably more deluxe first models than anyone and this one is absolutely exceptional in its rarity. 38-55 of course, serial just under 5000, it does NOT have the lifter detent. This gun was likely a personal special order as it was shipped on the same day it went to the warehouse. 26" full octagonal barrel full magazine, TAKEDOWN. Pistol gripped, likely XX or XXX wood with cap of course (I have NOT removed the buttstock for wood grading verification or assembly numbers - the wood is too fragile, especially in the higher grades,to risk removal for no apparent reason) the sights are standard and correct, all screws are original and excellent. It also has double set triggers (function MOST of the time - not broken, likely need some adjustment/tuning), the bore is dark as expected but very strong. The takedown (which has not been undone by me or anyone else in ?????) is tight as new. The checkering is very strong, never recut, the wood is very good with NO cracks or missing pieces and the overall metal condition is a very even patina greyish/brown with a few areas near the muzzle of very light pitting (looks much worse in the photo than it really is). A new owner could probably get another 20% out of the condition by disassembly and extremely careful cleaning. I rate the gun at a strong 50-60%. Those of you who know me also know my descriptions are low. Out of all First Models I have owned this is by far the scarcest I have ever seen and it letters exactly as described with a backup note from Jessie for good measure. Shipping commensurate with insurance cost. It would benefit immensely if the purchaser has their own insurance as most shippers will not cover the true value. Sane offers considered but this is my last first model out of about 30 and I'm not anxious to sell. This is very likely a one of one gun. A GI advocated email to acknowledge "no return" on this perfectly described specimen is required before shipment - I have had too many "window shoppers" and "parts swappers" to risk a gun of this rarity. Respectful offers considered.
