Description:
This fully restored Model 1886 carbine is in a configuration you do not see very offten. With just over 6,000 Model 1886 carbines built, these "musket style" carbines were supposedly built by Winchester for consideration by the Canadian North West Mounted Police (NWMP). These carbines have a very similar forend arrangement to that of the Model 1876’s used by the NWMP.
It is possible that “extra” forends from the Model 1876 carbine already in use by the NWMP were used for the Model 1886 carbine. The 1886 carbine forend was approximately ¼” shorter than the one already in use on the Model 1876. Winchester may have been trying to "recycle" their existing inventory of forends from the Model 1876 carbines.
These “Musket Style” forends were only offered by Winchester on the model 1886 from approximately serial #1-30,000. This carbine has the added "extra" of a color case hardened frame.
