Lock markings: "U.S. Springfield" ahead of eagle clutching arrows. No date on the lockplate. Breechblock markings: "U.S." over "MODEL" over "1873". These markings plus the 9 1/2" comb and 29 1/2" barrel identify this as a Model 1877 U.S. Trapdoor Cadet Rifle. There were approximately only 1050 of this model manufactured.
