SUPERB INNSCRIBED WILLIAM DOWNS AMERICAN SCRIMSHAW ARTILLERY POWDER HORN ATTRIBUTED TO THE TANSEL FAMILY CARVERS CA. 1820-30’S. 13” horn with 4” turned walnut base and screw plug. Brass artillery style throat mount (cap missing). Engraved with an American Eagle and several American shields as well as a pair of cannons on field carriages and a large Elephant with two figures at the top waving American flags. A banner in the Eagle’s beak is inscribed “WILLIAM DOWNS”. Beautiful coverage and execution with similarities to several Tansel family carved horns illustrated in Tom Grinslade’s book “POWDER HORNS-DOCUMENTS OF HISTORY” pp. 142-3. Tansel horns often incorporate exotic beasts such as the “LION” illustrated in horn number 3 of this article. Other similarities include the primitive style of the beasts as well as the parallel line shading used to delineate the fur and skin of the animals. Superb condition with the original patina on the horn and all the finish on the wood. A William Downs was an original member of the Cincinnati who appears to have lived into the 1830’s.
