SILVER PLATED BRONZESET by EMILE-CORIOLAN-HIPPOLYTE GUILLEMIN (1841 - 1907)
SIGNED on BOTH BASES, "Ele. Guillemin" ... 9" high ... 6 1/4" x 5 1/8" oval bases ... approximately 6 lbs each.
This is a very life-like depiction of a real-life situation. Shown are two gamblers, one with a drawn dagger and the other reaching for his rapier. Two friends are trying to keep the combatants apart. Scattered about on the floor are overturned drinking cups and playing cards. The dress of the four men is late Renaissance and the weapons are sharp edged but the tension shown in the faces and the action taking place has been known to happen in every time period.
Emile Guillemin was a sucessful Orientalist French sculptor who became popular in the US after the 1876 Centinial Exhibition. His pieces have been sold by Tiffany & Co and his work is sought after by collectors of today.
