WILKINSON SWORD BELONGING TO WORLD WAR ONE BRITISH ROYAL FLYING CORP PILOT GERMAN ACE BOELKE'S 21ST KILL
Description: This is a RARE WILKINSON SWORD SOLD TO ROYAL FLYING CORP PILOT, E.G.A. BOWEN, on 6 February 1914 (COPY OF WILKINSON SALES RECORD INCLUDED IN SALE). Eynon George Arthur Bowen graduated from THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY in December 1913. Lt. Bowen went to France with the Royal Garrison Artillery in June 1915, then volunteered for service with the Royal Flying Corp just two months later, qualifying first as an Observer, then as a Pilot on 6 March 1916. When he returned to the front he was posted to 22 Squadron. On 8 September 1916, he was flying his FE2b, Serial 4921, with Lt. Robert Macallan Stalker, acting as Observer, over Flers on the Somme Battlefield, when they unfortunately became a target for the famous German Ace, Oswald Boelke, the man who trained Baron Manfred von Richtofen. Boelke in his more able aeoplane shot down Bowen's aeroplane in flames, killing both Bowen and Stalker, their bodies never recovered. Excerpt from, "Knights of Germany: Oswald Boelke, German Ace," page 273, Johannes Werner, 2009: "Boelke's 21 Kill - 8 Sep. 1916- FE2b (4921) 22nd Sqn. Lt. Eynon George Arthur Bowen, RGA & RFC. Served in France with artillery and later as an Observer, Aero Cert. No. 2541, 6 June 1916. Lt. Robert McCallum Stalker, 5th Seaforth Highlanders att'd RFC. Both killed when they fell from their spinning and burning machine near Flers (France). A rare piece of World War One Aviation History. SOLD |
