This dragoon saber is a model 1833 contract specimen manufactured by N.P. AMES,cutlery firm of springfield ,Mass. The US regiment of Dragoons organized on March 2, 1833 had a new saber pattern authorized for their use. The saber was similar to the British light calvary saber of 1822. Ames produced single-edged blade with a slight curve, and with a heavy rounded guill back which runs it's entire length. This sword is in above good codition in many ways , the original brown leather is still intact, which is rare, and the blade contains much of the factory dark blue. The etching on the blade is clear with the foral design under the UNITEDS STATES, on the reverse the NPA CUTLER SPRINGFI 1833 OR 9 not sure. The blade leather washer is intact and in good condition as is the wire in the grip. The inspector stamp in the quillion is W S FOR WILLIAM SMITH ,on the thump guard their is a ? PL then ? R D , which would have been ORD for ordenace, 6,000 made less then 1,000 belived to be left , very rare to fine in this condition, if someone could find the scabbard to this model this would easly double the price.
