Scottish Basket-Hilt Broadsword (ca. 1650 – 1700)
Description: This is a well balanced sword that has a typical early Scottish basket-hilt, more open in design and lightly constructed than later examples. The sword measures 36 3/4" overall with a 31 1/4" straight, double-edged blade having narrow triple fullers. The blade has an overall pewter gray patina that has dark spots of freckling along the entire length, as well as a series of nicks along the edges that run up to the, now rounded, tip. The reverse of the blade has a series of unidentified maker markings running along the forte, possibly German or Italian in origin, and an old collection inventory number is also engraved there in small numerals. The hilt has a loosely attached, full basket guard, but fashioned with thin bars that meet at lightly engraved octagonal panels on either side. There is no quillon, but the guard does have rudimentary finger loops, and the grip has been relined with later, 18th or early 19th century green-black leather with an intact coiled bullion wire wrap. The conical pommel has deeply incised decorations with an exposed tang rivet. An almost identical example of this sword type is illustrated in “Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann (plate #233.S). This example is in good-near very good condition and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. {Ref. “Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann; 1973} SOLD Manufacturer: Scottish Model: Sword |
