German Hunting Dagger. (Hirschfanger) Imperial period of WWI or possibly earlier. Blade length is 13”. Overall length is 20 ½”. Manufactured by J. A. Henckels, Solingen (A company founded in 1731). Hilt is Staghorn mounted in gilted brass pommel cap, a dog and stag crossguard, and a boar attacked by dogs on the langet. The staghorn is also accented with oak leaves and acorn stubs. The blade is beautifully etched with scenes of a stag chasing a doe and a hunter poised to fire his rifle. The reverse is a scene of a boar being taken by four dogs with a hunter in pursuit, all in a woodland setting. The scabbard is excellent and has a pocket side knife with a stag handle. This is a very fine Hirschfanger that would be a pleasure to own.
