16th Century Japanese Katana by Kanehisa of Seki
Description: This is a very handsome sword that measures 35 3/4" overall (tip to tang), with a 27" highly curved blade with single fullers. The blade itself has an overall bright gray patina with complex, wavy temper line with notched profile and nie border, and long, o-kissaki tip. The steel has some minor blemishes along its length, most noticeably an oval spot of dark brown freckling near the habaki on the obverse side. The tang has two rivet holes with charcteristic Seki pattern file marks, and a partial inscription on the reverse: "Seki/(Shu)/?/Ju/Kane/Hisa". Kanehisa was a Seki swordsmith who worked ca. 1532. The sword is fitted with lovely Higo mounts: darkly patinated round iron tsuba has a darkly tarnished brass border with simple die-struck embellishments, serrated copper seppa, and white metal habaki. The tsuka has an original rayskin wrap that has cracked longitudinally over time, and an intact lacquered leather wrap that is still almost entirely intact. The fuchi and kashira have a dark, nearly black patina while the yellow gold band on the fuchi is still bright. The saya has a flaked patterned black lacquered finish that has a some minor cracks along the edges and flaking at the tip and throat. This is a handsome sword with very desirable furniture, and would make a welcome addition to any collection. SOLD Manufacturer: Japanese Model: Katana |
