English Pattern 1796 Light Dragoon Flintlock Pistol Circa 1800
Description: Very Good, English Pattern 1796 Light Dragoon Flintlock Pistol, circa 1800. In original flintlock configuration, .66 caliber smoothbore (Carbine Bore), pin fastened 9” barrel with a baluster turned breech. Top of breech is marked with two Board of Ordnance proof marks &, “VIII” under the touch hole. Regulation Pattern, molded & carved, full length English walnut stock with brass hardware. Raised beaver tail apron at barrel tang with pointed-finial triggerguard & lobed, screw fastened butt cap with short side terminals. Single barrel type ramrod pipe with replaced plain wooden ramrod. Stock is marked with numerous acceptance/inspector marks including, “Broad Arrow” marked on top of grip & a “T” stock inspector mark behind sideplate along with a “III” & “3” marking under the sideplate. The earlier replaced lockplate is marked with faint maker’s signature, “BRANDER” under the powder pan with decorative “hound’s-tooth” style engraving above signature. William Brander of London, UK was a noted gunsmith & military supplier/contractor from 1767-1779, thus putting the lock on this pistol 40 years older than the newer Pattern 1796 stock & barrel. Lock remains with original components with flat gooseneck hammer, a bridle-less powder pan, rounded working period refaced frizzen & a “trefoil” type frizzen spring. Overall very good condition, barrel & lockplate show matching smooth steel gray surfaces, with some expected signs of use & light pitting. Nicely toned brass furniture with a smooth mustard age patina. A nice example of the English Light Dragoon Pattern Pistol with a replaced mechanism.
