Pair of Wilkinson & Son, London Pistols
Description: Pair of Flintlock Pistols by James Wilkinson & Son A pair of very fine, high quality flintlock pistols with turn-off barrels with unusual (rarely seen) swivel turning levers attached to the barrels and folding triggers, ca. 1825. Beautifully engraved frames with excellent case color and untouched patina. The walnut stocks are in fine condition with very fine original checkering. The flintlocks have magnificent cocks, pans, frizzens and frizzen springs. They have sliding safeties and folding triggers. The “folding trigger” was a relatively intricate mechanism requiring greater skill on the part of the gunmaker and more time to construct, hence, these were relatively expensive pistols in their day This pair of pistols was made after James Wilkinson’s son, Henry, had joined in as a gunsmith in 1824. James Wilkinson was the shop foreman for Henry Nock, his father-in-law and was gifted the shop in 1804 by Henry Nock at his death. No doubt James was a very capable gunsmith and clearly perfectly placed to carry on the business at hand managing not only the premises in Pall Mall but the many other workshops scattered around London. History would show James Wilkinson every bit the equal to Henry Nock’s inventive genius. Henry Wilkinson was named after his grandfather Henry Nock. When Henry joined the family business in 1824, they changed the name from James Wilkinson to James Wilkinson & Son. These examples remain in fine and mechanically perfect condition throughout with most of the original blue on the barrels. It will be difficult to find a more collectible pair of English Pocket Pistols. Overall Length: 8 Inches gordonbarlowantiques 540-448-0344 SOLD Antique: Yes |
